본사찰은 1899년 최향관(명주스님 외조부)이 득남발원을 위해 작은 암자를 세웠음. 보문종을 창종하고 3·4대 종정을 지낸 정명주스님이 중창, 현재의 정혜사 대가람을 형성 2,000평이 넘는 경내지에 보광전, 명부전, 칠성각, 삼성각등 요사 부속건물 보문유치원을 전주에서 가장 규모가 큰 사찰로 발전되어 왔음.
