신라 제27대 선덕여왕 4년(645) 3월 명랑조사가 창건하여 건흥사라 칭하다가 후에 신흥사로 하였으며, 사기에 의하면 문무왕 16년(678) 신라가 만리장성을 축성당시 승병 100여명이 이 절에 숙영하면서 무술을 연마하던 도장이었고, 임진왜란 때 불타버리고 당시 도호부사 정공이 재건하고 영조 28년(1752) 통도사 사봉스님이 중창하고 단청은 경상좌병사 이상국이 하였다. 이 절에는 탑이나 부도등은 다 볼 수 없고 근방에 주춧돌과 깨어진 기와장들이 여기저기 흩어져 있어 엤날에는 큰 규모의 절이 었음을 말해주고 있다.
