신라 헌강왕 2년 도선국사가 창건한 사찰로서 진묵대사와 제자 원응선사가 이곳에서 수도를 하였다고 함. 원응선사가 북편 진묵굴에서 수행도중에 마셨던 물이 약수라 하여 한때 약수암이라 부르기도 하였으며 임진왜란때 소실되었으나 영조 16년(1740) 조관대사가 중창하였음.
