Recorded origin, in the register's own words
1300여년전인 신리문무왕 17년에 의상,원효,윤필 등 3성인이 지은 암자가 삼막사의 근본이며, 이후 도선국사가 관음사로 부르다가 삼막사로 바뀌었다. 고려 충무왕 4년 나옹대사와 인도승려 지공이 이곳으로 와 선풍이 일었으며 조선태종 7년 대중창을 하였다. 선조 25년인 1592년 왜구가 침범, 불을 질렀으나 법당이 타지않아 왜구가 참회하고 떠났으며 이후 도장을 일신하였는데 1990년 대웅전 화재로 문화재 2점이 소실되었다.
