신라시대 소달이라는 도승이 절을 창건할 때산정에 올라 절터를 잡고자 백일기도를 마치고 산을 둘러보니 현절터만이 하얗게 서리가 내려있어 부처님이 점지한 절터임을 깨닫고 이절을 창건하고 설왕사(설랭이절)라 부르다가 흥왕사로 개칭되었다.
