고려말에서 조선중기까지 지공선사, 나옹선사, 무학대사등의 명승들이 중창하였고 특히 무학대사 때에는 태조 이성계의 왕실의 지원을 받아 중창하였으나 이후 숭유억불정책에 따라 유림들에 의해 소실된것으로 추정되며 이후에 기존 회암사에 위쪽에 재건하여 오늘에 이르고 있다. 주변에 사적 128호 회암사지, 보물 387호 회암사지선각왕사비, 388호 횡마사지부도, 389호 회암사지쌍사자석등과 경기도 지정 유형문화재 49호 지공선사부도및석등, 50호 나옹선사부도및석등, 51호 무학대사비, 52호 회암사지부도탑 등 많은 문화재가 있다.
