Recorded origin, in the register's own words
조선 중종 17년(1522년) 신월대사가 창건하였다. 광해군 10년(1618년)에 화재로 전소하였으나 다음해 복원하였고, 고종 3년 대원군의 시주로 용선, 범운 양 대사가 중수하고, 고종 7년(1870년) 대웅전, 명부전을 중건하였다. 경내에는 대원군의 친필현판을 비롯해서 추사 김정희, 위당 신관호의 필적이 있다.
