Recorded origin, in the register's own words
봉화군 소천면 고선리 산 127- 6번지에 위치하며 여러차례의 화재로 소실되어 유래를 상고하기는 어렵다. 신라 진흥왕때 원효대사가 창건하였다고는 하나 진흥왕때에는 원효대사의 재세이전이므로 문무왕때 창건되었을 것으로 본다. 이 사찰에는 조선왕조 제14대 선조때 사명대사가 허물어진 사찰을 중건하였으며, 그때는 사명대사가 임진왜란때 승병을 이끌고 왜군을 토벌한 군공을 세우고 선조로부터 시호를 받은 뒤였기 때문에 이 사찰은 광대하고 사명대사의 가르침을 받기 위해 많은 승려들이 이곳에서 기거했으리라 추측할 수 있다. 대사는 이절을 중건하시고 시호를 따서 홍제사라 명명하였다고 전해온다. 이 절에는 사명대사와 서산대사의 영정을 모셔왔는데 1960년초에 소실되고 현재의 사찰건물은1966년3월에 중수되었다.
