신라 문무왕 12년 의상조사 창건 의상이 관음보살의 진실을 친견한 곳인 관음굴 위에 지은 불전으로서 이곳에서 밤낮없이 7일동안 기도를 하자 바다위에서 홍련이 솟아났고, 그 꽃속에서 관음보살이 현신했다하여 홍련암으로 명명한 것으로 전해짐.
