동작동 국립현충원내 위치한 이 절은 신라말 경문왕때 도선국사가 창건했다. 이후 고려말 공민왕때 보인대사가 중창하여 화장사로 개명했다가 호국영령의 명복을 기원하는 국가의 사찰이 되면서 호국지장사라 개칭했다
