금구읍지 등의 관련 문헌에 의하면 금구의 안산인 남산 아래 한때 민족문화 유산으로서 역사적 의의를 가졌던 개동사를 계승한 최소 600여년 이상의 역사를 가진 사찰로서 폐허이던 동 사찰을 약 100여년 전에 이청정월 보살이 크게 중창하면서 혜봉사라 개칭하였음.
