신라 46대 문성왕 8년(847 A.D) 보조국사가 창건하여 법흥사라 칭하였었으나, 고려말 공민왕이 홍건적의 난을 피해 이곳에 행차하였을 때 국운을 많이 입었다고 해서 그 후 혜국사로 개명한 고찰이다
