신라 제23대 법흥왕(재위514-539)때인도에서온 마라아미 스님을 위하여 창건.그후 수백년동안 폐허로 버려져오다가 고려 제21대 희종(재위1204-1211)때 보조국사 지각이 절을 중건하고 현등사라함. 그 뒤 조선 태종11년4월 함허대사가 중수했고 순조 29년(1829)화재를 맞아 건물이 전소된것을 이듬해 최윤,원빈 스님이 보광전,극락전,요사체등 건물을 중수하였다. 1984년 충현스님이 극락전,보광전 등을 개축하여 오늘에 이르렀다.현재 현등사는 남양주 봉선사의 말사로 되어 있다.
