Recorded origin, in the register's own words
한천사(寒天寺)는 신라 문무왕 16년(676) 의상대사(義湘大師)가 창건하였다. 절이 융성(隆盛)하던 때의 규모나 내용은 기록으로 전하는바 없어 알 수 없지만 절에 현존하는 탑상(塔象), 즉 석탑과 철분의 양삼 그리고 사각이나 원형의 거대한 주초석(柱礎石) 등을 보아 신라말기에는 사세(寺勢)가 매우 왕성했던 것으로 짐작된다. 지난 1989년 가을 도량 조경작업을 하던 중 청동(靑銅)자물쇠 3점, 청동반자(靑銅半子) 1점, 청동용세(靑銅龍紐) 1점, 청동주완 1점이 발견되어 경주박물관(慶州博物館)에 감정 의뢰한 결과 고려시대 유품으로 확인되어 관리보존상 직지사(直旨寺) 유물전시관에 보관하고 있다.
