안양사는 고려 태조 왕건이 900년에 능정이란 스님을 만나 세운 사찰이라 전해지며 오늘날 안양시의 지명유래와 관련이 있는 것으로 보인다. 신증동국여지승람에는 최영 장군이 7층 전탑을 세우고 조선 태종 11년에 태종께서 온양에 온천욕을 가던중 들렸다라고 기록되어 있으며 현재의 대부분 건물은 1960년 이후 신축 중수한 것이다.
