본사찰은 조선태조 이성계가 이곳을 지나다 산세가 아름답고 조용하며 산수가 깨끗하여 산신각에서 공부하다 갔다고 함. 그후 1550년 명종 5년 광혜화상이 창건하였다고 하는데 학소암이라 하게된 연유는 이곳의 지형이 학의 집터 같다는데서 학소암이라 했다고 함. 학소암의 전설 한토막을 소개하면 학이 알을 품을때는 학소암과 그부근이 부하고 번성하였으면 학이 없어질때는 궁핍해진다고 했음
