영주시 도심의 대표적 사찰로 1903년 문경 김용사 직할 포교당으로 세워졌으나, 그 연도는 정확하지 않다. 창건 또한 지역사찰 공동모금 형식으로 이루어졌으며, 이를 주도한 사찰이 김용사라고 한다.
