Recorded origin, in the register's own words

1895년(고종32)에 비구니 윤홍자 스님이 창건하였다고 한다. 약 100년의 역사를 지니고 있으나 창건무렵의 인연이나 자세한 과정은 전하지 않는다. 한편 1922년에 처음 절을 세웠다는 이야기도 있으나 정확하 것은 알 수 없다. 절의 역사가 전하는 것은 1934년 12월 15일 선학원에 등록하면서 부터이다. 선학원은 불법의 정통인 선을 탐구하고 선풍을 선양함으로써 불교의 중흥을 이룩하고자 만공, 용성, 혜월, 도봉, 석두, 남천, 상월 등 여러 고승대덕들이 중심이 되어 1920년 설립하였다. 선학원 소속사찰인 팔달선원은 1986뇬 9월에 이범행 스님이 중창하여 가람을 새롭게 하였다. 출처 : 전통사찰총서3 경기도Ⅰ, 사찰문화연구원, 1993
