파계사는 신라804년(애장왕 5년) 심지왕사가 창건 하였으며, 조선1605년(선조 38년) 계관법사가 임진왜란으로 소실된 것을 중창 하였고, 조선1695년(숙종21년) 현흥대사가 삼창하였다고 함. 절의 좌석 계곡에서 흐르는 물줄기가9군데나 되므로 이물이 흩어지지 못하게 잡아 모은다는 뜻에서 파계사라 함.
