지금으로부터 1330여년전 신라시대 선덕여왕 15년(서기646년)에 자장율사께서 창건 국내 3대사찰로 불보대찰인 통도사는 석가모니 부처님의 진신사리를 봉안한 사리탑을 중심으로 많은 건물이 배치되어 있는 사찰이다. 사찰을 대표하는 대웅전,금강계단은 계율을 전수하며,불법을 교설하는 설법전으로 많은 불자들이 이곳을 통하여 입문하는 곳이며, 건물의 구조는 지형과 원융하게 조화를 이루는 이룬 특이한 양식이다.
