장명사는 원래 작은 암자로서 지금의 삼성각자리에 있었던 것을 일제시대 조선총독부 산하 삼척탄광개발주식회사(현 대한석탄공사)에서 헐어버리고 1945년 증축과 몇번의 개축으로 지금에 이르고 있다.
