서기 643년 백제무왕 34년에 창건하였다.고려공민왕때 폐사되었던것을 1420년에 세종대왕의 명에 의해 중창하였다.특히 태국사는 안흥항을 통해 드나드는 내외사신들의 무사를 비는 사찰이었으며 국난시에는 태국사의 주지가 승군을 지휘할수 있는 권한을 가지고 있었다.
