1920년경 이갑룡이 마이산에 들어와 초가 암자를 짓고 거주하면서 돌미륵불을 안치해 놓고 불공을 드리기 시작하고 1935년경 목조 함석지붕 단층 주택으로 개축하고 편의상 탑사(塔舍)로 불려왔다가 이갑룡의 손(孫) 이왕선이 사찰등록을 하여 탑사(塔寺)로 이름이 정해졌다.
