신라 성덕왕 19년에 창건. 인조 2년(1624)벽암대사가 중건. 이곳에는 약수가 있는데 법주사에 소장된 사적기에 의하면 경주김씨의 시조인 김알지의 머리모습이 닭모양으로 생겼는데 이곳 약수를 마시고 사람형상의 머리로 바뀌어졌다하여 탈골암이라 전함.
