서기 101년 가락국의 시조인 김수로왕의 칠왕자가 이곳에 입산하여 수도하던 중 103년에 깨달음을 얻어 부처를 이룬것을 기념하여 김수로왕이 절을 짓고 칠불암이라 이름하였다.
