1628년(조선 인조 6년 무진)에 대흥사 7개암자중 하나로 창건되었음 1676년(조선 숙종 2년) 대홍수로 청련사 입구쪽에 위치했던 대사찰 대흥사가 유실되고 유실후 잔존성 보물을 청련사로 옮겨 모시고 동암이라 개칭하고 1842년(조선 헌종8년)덕암스님이허물어진 사찰을 중창하였으며, 1911년 일제때 조선 사찰령 시행당시 청련암으로 복귀하여 현재에 이르럼
