도립공원 청량산 한복판에 자리잡은 청량사는 신라 제30대 문무왕 3년 663년에 원효대사가 창건하였다. 청량산은 자연경관이 수려하여 한때는 신라의 고찰인 연대사와 망선암등 27개소의 사암이 밀집되어 당시 불교의 요람을 형성하였다. 신라의 명필 김생, 최치원등 석학들이 여기에서 수련하였으며 고려 제31대 공민왕이 홍건적의 난으로 이곳에 피난와서 많은 유적을 남겼다. 또한 성리학의 대가 퇴계이황도 여기에서 학문을 닦은후 유학으로 대성한 곳이다. 경상북도 지정문화재인 유리보전의 현판은 공민왕이 이곳에 머무를 때에 친필로 쓴것으로 전하고 있다.
