신라시대창건고려충열왕10년(1284)시중 조인규에 의해 중건/사원규모와배치는 조선시대전형 조선연산군이도성내 사찰을 없애고자하자 불교측에서 이곳을 선종의본산으로 정하였다. 조선숙종15년(1689)에 세운 '청계사사적기비'가 있고, 조선후기 건축물인 극락보전이 있다. 극락보전 중앙엔 아미타여래좌상이 봉안되어 있고,좌우에 관음보살상과 대세지보살이 협대하고 있다. 그외 산신각,요사,삼성당,감로지등이 있다.
