신라 진평왕년간에 원효대사가 창건 신라 헌강왕 원년 도선국사의 중창으로 팔만구암자를 두었음 임난으로 소실되고 영조녀간에 재건하여 칠선사로 개칭 대한제국 광무 10년 화재로 소실되었으나 광복이후 관민의 협조로 재건하여 천황사로 칭함
