신라 흥덕왕 4년(829년)에 창건하였을 때는 백련대라 했고, 고려 충렬왕때 이승휴가 간장암을 다시 지었고, 조선조 선조 31년 청허대사가 이절을 중수하여 흑악사라 개명앴다. 그후 수차례 걸친 중수후 이중하가 천은사라 개명했다.
