팔공산 동편 능선에 자리잡고 있으며, 확실한 창건연대는 전해지지 않으나, 신라 흥덕왕 때 의상대사가 창건하였다고 전한다. 사방 어느 곳에서 바라보아도 바위암반이 가리워져 사찰을 찾지 못하는게 특징이다. 법당의 창건기로 미루어보면, 관음전은 1959년에 신축하여 이듬해 단청을 하였으며, 요사체는 1954에, 산령각은 1960년에 신축한 것이다.
