고려 충렬왕 3년(1277) 도일선사기 수도암을 창건하고 광해군 2년 혜식선사가 중창 채운암이라 칭함. 현위치는 효종 3년 헤일선사가 환장사를 창건한 곳으로 1948년 큰홍수로 채운암이 파손되자 그 요사채 일부를 이곳으로 옮기고 환장사를 합쳐 채운암이라 함.
