이전에는 大懺寺. 懺堂寺등으로 불렸으며, 규모가 상당히 큰 사찰이었다고 한다. 이절은 진평왕 49년(627)에서 진덕여왕 3년(649)사이에 義雲祖師가 창건하였고, 충숙왕 16년(1329) 上樑이 대웅전을 중수하였으며 중종 25년(1530)에 一軒이 중수하였다.
