증심사는 9세기 중엽 창건된 고찰로 고려 선종 11년(1094년) 해조국사가 중창하였고, 조선 세종 25년(1443) 김방이 3창 하였으며, 광해군 원년(1609) 석경, 수장, 도광 3대 선사가 4창하였다고 함. 그 후 몇차례의 보수를 거치면서 근년에까지 이르렀으나, 한국동란의 전화로 오백전과 노전을 제외한 대부분의 건축물과 불상, 탱화 등이 소실됨
