신라 성덕왕 19년에 창건되었음. 조선 인조때 중건하였으며 영조33년(1757) 현종3년(1837) 고종24년(1887)에 각각 중수함. 1949년 상효선사가 중창하였음. 원래 이 부근에는 상사자암과 하사자암이 있었다고 하나 100여년전 폐사되고 중사자암만 남아있음.
