신라 진평왕32년(610)에 법정대사가 창건하여 화남사라 칭하였고 그 뒤 대나무가 무성하게 자라 죽림사라 개칭 고려 명종10년(1180) 왕사였던 보조국사가 중건 조선 테조때 무학대사가 중수하였다.
