선덕여왕 8년(639) 회정대사가 창건하여 淨修寺라 했다. 조선 세종 8년(1426) 함허대사가 중창하였다수 하며, 중창시 법당 서쪽에서 맑은 물이 나와 淨水寺라 개칭하였다 함.
