신라 문무왕4년(664)원효대사가 토굴로 창건 흥덕왕3년(828)심지왕사가 중창 고려 명종5년(1175)보조국사가 중건 영산전을 세움 임란 때 일부소실 현종5년(1664)왕의 사액으로 중수하여 현재에 이르고있다.
