경남 고성군 거류면 한복판에 우뚝 솟은 거류산(570m)중턱에 위치한 장의사는 신라 원효대사가 선덕여왕 1년 (서기 632년)에 창건하여 6.25사변의 병화를 입었으며 1891년 성담화상이 중창한 것을 비롯하여 1917년 효봉화상에 의하여 증건되고 그후 신도들에 의해 보광전을 중건하여 오늘에 이르며 사찰의 뒤로는 기암괴석이 웅장하게 치솟아 울창한 수목과 더불어 조화를 이루고 있다.
