신라 문무왕 13년(673)에 원효대사가 창건하여 쌍계사라고 했다가 애장왕때 장안사라 개칭하였다고 한다. 1592년 임진왜란으로 불탄것을 1631년 태의대사가 중건하였고, 1941년 각현스님이 중건하였다고 한다.
