자비사는 구전에 의하면 약 1,600여년 전 중국의 고승 명장이 타고 있던 배가 서해안에 도착하게 되었다. 그런데 돌아가지 못하게 되자 고향이 바라보이는 이곳에 절을 지어 고향을 그리는 마음을 담아 望漢寺라 했다고 한다. 그후 언제인가 폐사가 되었는데 마을사람들이 이러한 뜻을 기리기 위해 다시 절을 세우고는 고을 수령에게 이름을 지어달라 하자 望漢寺의 望자와 漢자이 위치를 바꾸어 漢望 寺라 했다가 慈悲寺로 부르게 되었다 한다.
