신라 경명왕 5년(AD 921) 영조대사가 창건, 서기 1811년에 무주선사가 중창, 1430년에 포산선사가 삼창하였으며 같은 해 고려 태조 왕건이 팔공산에서 후백제 견훤과의 동수대전에서 패하여 이 절로 와서 군사를 재정비하며 편히 쉬어 갔다하여 임휴사 라는 사명이 붙게 됨
