신라 진덕여왕 5년 원효대사의 창건으로 전해오나 현재의 대웅전은 조선중기의 건물이다. 이 전각은 정면 3칸 측면 2칸의 단층 팔작기와집으로, 다듬은 돌 바른층쌓기의 기단위에 막돌초석을 놓고 민흘림 두리기둥을 세웠다. 공포는 내·외3출목으로, 기둥 위와 기둥사이 평방위에 모두 짜 올린 다포식으로 되어 있다. 첨차가 내외 모두 교두형으로 조선 초기의 양식을 이루고 있으나 외목도리를 고정시키고 있는 조각의 모양으로 보아 조선 중기의 건축이라 추측된다. 정면 창호는 팔각 불발기와 띠살을 혼합한 특이한 모양을 이루고 있다.
