ㅇ월리사의 창건주는 신라의 고승 의상대로 구름을 벗 삼아 이곳 샘봉산 아래 절을 짓고는 보름달의 청정함에 큰 깨달음을 얻어 월리사라는 이름을 남겼다 하나 문헌상으로는 확인되지 않으며, ㅇ1632년(인조 10)경에 제작한 것으로 추정되는 호서승람 불우편에 월리초막(月裡草幕)이 등장하는 것을 시작으로 『여지도서』, 『호서읍지』 등에도 잇따라 등장한다. ㅇ 따라서 조선후기에는 법등을 유지했던 것으로 보인다. 이를 증명하듯 월리사에는 1665년(현종 8) 절을 중건한 것을 기념하기 위해 세운 『월리사사적비』가 남아 있다.
