신라시대 원효대사가 창건하여 수도하였던 사찰로 알려지고 있으며 뒷산록에는 통일신라시대의 마애좌불과 경내지에는 삼층석탑의 석조부재가 남아있다. 원효암은 은해사 남쪽 팔공산 동록의 한 산각상에 자리잡고 있는 은해사의 말사로서 그 창건연대는 알수 없으나 이곳에서 신라시대부터 고찰이 있었다고 한다.
