사찰의 정확한 유래와 연혁을 알 수 없으나 이름과 의상대가 있는 것으로 보아 의상대사가 창건한 것으로 추정하고 있다. 원효암은 6.25때 소실되고 의상대는 소실되지 않앗으나, 창건연대가 미상이며 사찰의 기록에 의하면 1370년에 세웠다고 한다.
