단양 황정산 자락에 원만하게 도를 통한다 라는 뜻을 가진 원통암이 자리를 잡고 있으며 창건연대는 양산 통도사 창건시기와 같은 시기에 창건된 단양 대흥사가 융설할 시기인 고려 공민왕 2년(1353년) 나옹선사가 창건하였음. 대흥사 큰스님의 선방과 학문의 도량으로 활동하여 많은 스님들이 이곳에서 수도 정진 하였으며 특히 나옹선사는 이곳 원통암에 토굴하여 수양과 득도의 깨달음으로 토굴가를 지었다는 설이 전해오고 있는곳이다.
