1914년 4월(불기2941년 갑인유하)에 선암사의 포교당으로 창건됨. 금봉의 초창이래 신봉 및 청호스님으로 이어져 1932년 봄 포교사 하석이 부임하였음. 그후 1939년 가을 이필중이 선친 이규석의 유지를 받들어 중수, 확장하였음. 원각사는 초창 당시에는 선암사의 포교당으로서 출발하였으나 현재는 송광사 포교당으로서의 역할을 담당하고 있음.
