서기 803년에 건립되었으며 신라40대 애장왕 4년 합천 해인사와 같은해에 건립되었고 만인의 소원을 이루는 곳으라 하여 원암담이라고도 하였으며, 산신령이 좌정한 곳도 주위의 바위가 병품처럼 둘러싸여 구름과같다 하여 운암사라 함.
