용흥사는 갑장산 서편 중턱에 자리잡은 고찰이다 신라 문성왕 원년(839년) 진감국사가 창건하였다고 전한다. 그러나 1968년 극락보전을 해체 보수항때 발견된 기문에 의하면 고려말 나옹화상이 창건한 후 1647년(인조25) 법심 인화스님이 중창하고 1680년(숙종6)에 思유, 弘治 두스님이 두번 중수하는 등 여러차례 중수하였다 경내에는 극락보전, 나한전, 산성각, 백운선원 등의 전각이 배치되었다 경내에 5층석탑은 1976년 6월 30일 극락보전에 봉안된 탱화에서 발견된 사리를 이 탑에 봉안하여 세운것이다.
